Book Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ (Revised Edition) Review :

As a retired med school teacher and researcher I read Gut critically, which is a different way from educated laymen and lay women. So first of all let me praise where praise is due: 1. The author courageously waded into an area that few ever dared to mention – the bodily functions that are generally taboo and during our early childhood and through our adult years are the richest source of euphemisms and misnomers; 2. She correctly points to the fact that every physician knows well and everybody else has to acknowledge – a problem with digestion or defecation (i.e. poo-ing) is a real problem well worth discussing with our doctor, and perhaps also friends at the coffe&cake gathering; 3. She also timely points out that our scientific knowledge of interactions between the gut and the rest of us is only in diapers and we should be pushing for this urgently needed science to emerge at least into the toilet training stage; 4. She provides a wealth of interesting and important facts that most lay audience and even many well-read life scientists sorely lack. So far so good, but…On the down side: a. In order to make her case she is knowingly mixing well-founded and proven research with fragmentary and not thoroughly worked out hypotheses, While people with professional training could easily sift through this mélange, lay reader is patently unable to do the same and has to accept every paragraph as iron-clad fact; b. She is sometimes inaccurate or mistaken (at least according to my info) – Thus norepinephrine is not a hormone, serotonin synthesis is not rate-limited by the amount of tryptophan and gut serotonin would never cross the intact blood-brain barrier, and other minor glitches; c. The connections between brain and gut are still quite tenuous and relationship between gut flora and mental disorders is hypothetical at best. I would carefully advise to wait and see before adopting this axis too seriously; d. Dealing with such a complex subject, illustrations are supposed to help one understand, not amuse. The illustrations are a disaster. The author's sister might be a wonderful and talented person, but as an illustrator she's better suited to children's comics than to this kind of book. So down with nepotism and a full star demerit for that alone.
I'm learning a lot about the gut, but the problem is I just don't know how much of it is true, because she comes to basic conclusions that are obviously flat-out wrong.Very early on, she writes "That's why you should always close the bottle or container of olive oil carefully after use and keep it in the fridge." Anyone who cooks knows that olive oil is solid when refrigerated... which is why literally nobody keeps it in the fridge. If she throws around falsehoods like this that are so easily disproven, it makes it really hard for me believe any of the hundreds of other conclusions about our gut peppered throughout the book.
